Zion Lutheran Sunday School
Back to Sunday school home
Zion Lutheran Sunday School offers classes starting with pre-kindergarten/nursery, kindergarten, 1st/2nd grades, 3rd/4th grades, and 5th/6th grades with teachers who have a long-standing affiliation with the church and a devout dedication to bringing His Word to the young. The children come together for opening worship in Sunday School at 9:15am in the Fellowship Hall, which includes opening devotions, song, announcements, and prayer. For Junior High and Senior High grades (7th through 12th), we offer an inspiring youth Bible study, conducted by one of the church elders. All classes run from 9:30am to 10:15am.
On Rally Day, usually the 2nd Sunday in September, the 3rd grade students are presented with their own Bibles during a special Rally Day worship service during church. This year we held the First Annual Rally Day hot dog fest which was alot of fun, and will be continued! We conclude the Sunday School year with a church family picnic the second Sunday in June with children's games, lots of great food and fellowship, a baseball competition between the youth group and the not-so-youth group (!), egg toss, sing-along and much more!
The Sunday School children focus on several outreach mission projects during the year. We celebrate birthdays on the last Sunday of the month. Each child brings in a penny for each year he/she has been blessed with, receiving a special birthday token from the Sunday School. The collected pennies go towards a special LCMS children's mission project. Other mission projects we have completed have reached out to the military overseas and our church shut-ins with Valentine's, Easter and Thanksgiving cards. We also sponsored a toy/clothing drive for a family, outside the church, who lost alot during a home fire. We have also held food drives to help benefit the Connecticut Food Bank.
The Sunday School children also take an active part in aspects of the church's worship service, i.e. with a special Children's Christmas Service, participation in the Palm Sunday worship service, and sharing songs they've learned with the congregation during the year.
Weekly attendance is encouraged, and we welcome new students at any time during the Sunday School year. If you've been out for a while, we welcome you back!
Current Sunday School Activities
The Sunday School is currently sponsoring a church-wide Lenten program entitled Operation Starfish (offered through Food for the Poor). This program will run from Ash Wednesday (February 17) and conclude on Easter Sunday (and the following Sunday) with the collection of the offering boxes. It is an in-home program, designed for families to work on together at home, with workbooks containing lessons and activities focusing on sharing and sacrifice. Collection boxes have also been placed in the Church conference room and in the narthex. ALL OF THE PROCEEDS FROM THIS PROJECT HAVE BEEN DESIGNATED BY FOOD FOR THE POOR TO BENEFIT ALL THE CHILDREN IN HAITI AFFLICTED BY THE RECENT EARTHQUAKE. An announcement of the total funds collected will be made to the congregation on April 17 and 18. Every penny counts towards this worthwhile project...just like throwing a starfish back into the ocean. (Can you find the starfish in the church?)
The Sunday School also gave out Valentine bookmarks at our recent "coffee and" on Valentine's Day!
If you should have any questions, please contact the church or, Susan Brady, Sunday School Superintendent (203-467-9269 or gizmobrady@sbcglobal.net).
